Biography

Ethel was born in Tonypandy, Wales. Her parents were Thomas Gifford and Mary (Taafe) Gifford. In 1901 was was living with her parents in Tonypandy. Her father was a Coal Miner who worked at the Coal face. ^[1]

In 1911 the family sailed to Massachusetts, leaving from Liverpool. ^[2] and in 1920 they were living in Wood River, Madison, Illinois. Her father was a Watchman for an Oil company and Ethel was a Telephone Operator. ^[3]

Subsequent records (eg She is listed as Ethel King in her father's obituary) and various passenger lists indicate that she married Cecil Eugene King.

Ethel is listed on a number of Passenger lists, notably to Miami Florida (with Cecil and the boys in 1932) ^[4] and Puerto Rico in 1936 (where Ethel adds that she is a US Citizen by marriage. ^[5]

In 1940 the census shows Cecil, Ethel and 3 sons, Cecil Gifford, Ralph Bernard and Thomas Stanley aged 19,10 and 13, living in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas. Cecil was in construction. The family indicated that 5 years earlier they had been living in Aruba in the West Indies. Cecil was from Illinois while Ethel was from Wales. ^[6] Cecil died two years later, in 1942. ^[7]

Ethel died in California on 18th December 1968. Her mother's maiden name was confirmed as Taffe. ^[8]
