Humphrey was born on 9 February 1759 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of Obadiah Gifford and Mary (Salisbury) Gifford.[1]

"Birth dates of Obadiah Gifford's first five children born, were from a family bible 1717-1939, as no court birth records were found, per Edward A. Gifford of Hudson, New York, d. about 1940"

Humphrey Gifford, and his brothers John and Henry, served in the 6th Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia. [2]

His occupation was that of a carpenter.

He died about 1803 in Hudson, Columbia, New York.

He married Hannah Palmer on 28d 11m 1782 [28 November 1782] in Dutchess County, New York.[1] The following excerpt is from the records of the Nine Partners monthly meeting:[1]

Nine Partners Twenty-Eighth day of the Eleventh month in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Two [1782].

Whereas Humphrey Gifford son of Obadiah Gifford and Mary is wife of the County of Dutchess … and Hannah Palmer daughter of Peter Palmer Deceas’d and Sarah his wife of the County … above s’d [said] … Declared their Intention of Marriage … in the Ninepartners … Consent of Parents … allowed of by s’d [said] Meetings … [signed] Humphrey Gifford Hannah Gifford …
