Biography

Jesse was born in 1789 in Orange County, North Carolina. He passed away in 1870. It is unknown where he died, but he is buried next to his first wife Sarah Marshall Gifford in Jasper County, Illinois: Find A Grave: Memorial #43448354 Jesse Gifford

Jesse didn't stay in one place long. He appears in Quaker records in Orange County, North Carolina, from birth until at least 1815, when his father Levi and family get certificates to Lick Creek Monthly Meeting in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana. (Jesse cannot be found in 1810 North Carolina or Indiana census after his 1808 North Carolina marriage.) He appears in the 1820 census of Orange County, Indiana.

In 1830, Jesse appears in Blue River, Johnson County, Indiana, where he may be living on land later inherited from his father Levi in 1832. By 1840 he is in Coles County, Illinois. He moves on to Jasper County, Illinois, by 1847, when his wife Sarah died on Valentine's Day and was buried in Yale's Hunt Cemetery. In June, 1847, he marries Delia Boyd, a widow. We find Delia Boyd three years later in her own household in Crawford County, Illinois, with several Boyd children and a two-year-old child, Lucretia Gifford. The marriage must not have worked out.

Jesse is still in Jasper County, Illinois, in 1850 where he appears in the Agricultural Census along with son Isaac and three sons-in-law.

1855 finds Jesse remarried (1851 in Jasper County, Illinois) to Reuhama Higbee Vansant and appearing in Crawford County, Illinois, state census. (Reuhama's first husband was Joel Vansant.) In 1858 Jesse marries yet again in Jasper County, Illinois, to Elizabeth Livingston. They are seen together in the 1860 Kirklin, ClintonCounty, Indiana census next door to Jesse's daughter Naomi Wheeler.

Wait, you may say, Jesse never appeared in a Clinton County, Indiana, census before 1860. Why now, at the age of 70 ? It seems he did buy land in Clinton County, Indiana at least twice, in 1837 and again in 1849. I also think he lived there between the 1830 Indiana and 1840 Illinois censuses, since three of his daughters were living in Clinton County, Indiana, with husbands in 1850. By the time Jesse is seen in the 1860 Clinton County, Indiana census, two of his daughters remain there.

Unfortunately, I have yet to discover where Jesse Gifford died. His tombstone in Yale, Jasper, Illinois tells us when he died, but not where. I am happy that his descendants decided to bury him with his first wife, my 4th-gr-grandmother....if, in fact, he is under that stone.
