Samuel Gilbert was presumably born in Connecticut Colony, however on a Land Record in Leroy, Genesee, NY he stated he was from Tully, Onondoga, NY.^{[citation needed]}

His gravestone at Van Allen Cemetery records that he died on 21 Apr 1843 aged ?71 (hard to interpret gravestone image).^[1] Family lore states "he was killed!"
