The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn, New York), 22 Oct 1914, Thu, Page 10 Thomas F Gilbert dies Hempstead Town Clerk had been ill for several weeks Died at his home here (Hempstead) last night after an illness of several weeks. While in the PA mountains last summer, Mr Gilbert was stricken with a hemorrhage and had been ill since. Was 52 years of age. Survived by widow Mary Anne Gilbert and 5 children: Franklin C, Birdsall E, Harry F, Hazel L, and Helen M Gilbert, and sister Mrs Sarah A Carman. Funeral services will probably be conducted on Sunday, interment, Greenfield Cemetery.

Hempstead Sentinel, 22 Oct 1914, p1: Town Clerk TF Gilbert Jr dead Well known official passed away Wednesday evening at his home in Hempstead Died half-past five o'clock Wednes afternoon, of tuberculosis. Had always enjoyed good health until 3 years ago when he was taken ill with typhoid fever, the effects of which left him in such weakened condition that he was forced to go away for his health. He went to Phoenix AZ and Redlands CA for six months, returned to Hempstead much improved. Last August while at Delaware Water Gap on vacation, he was taken suddenly ill with hemorrhages. Born Hempstead 14 Dec 1862, spent entire life here. Formerly kept harness shop and shoe store, engaged in fruit business, awning and tent maker, a caterer, auctioneer, and undertaker. (further discussion of political and fraternal aspects) Survived by wife Mary Anna; 3 sons: Franklin C, Birdsall E, and Harry F; 2 dtrs, Hazel L and Helen M; sister Sarah Carman of Hempstead and father Thomas F Gilbert Sr of Mineola. Funeral service will be Sunday (25 Oct), interment Greenfield Cemetery.

Note: Hempstead was in both counties, Queens and Nassau during his time. In 1900 Nassau County was formed from Queens.
