"William the son of William Gilbert and Elizabeth his wife was christened" at Uttoxeter, St Mary, on 21 Sep 1643.[1]

William is mentioned in the 1680 will[2] of his father and also in the 1699/1700 will[3] of his uncle Edward, with a daughter Elizabeth.

A bond for the marriage of William Gilbert of Uttoxeter, age 40, and Anna Litttleton of Hanbury, age 30, was posted on 18 Jul 1683. Place of marriage either Marchington or Stow.[4]

Anna Littleton was William's second wife, as the register entry for his daughter Dorothy names his wife Elizabeth.

Plaintiffs: William Gilbert, gent (brother and heir of Ralph Gilbert, gent deceased) both of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.
Defendants: Sarah Wood, widow, Startin Wood, Samuel How and William Slater.

William Gilbert was buried at Uttoxeter, St Mary, on 31 Mar 1724 aged 82.[7]

The extensive Will of William Gilbert Gentleman of Uttoxeter was dated 13 Mar 1723/24 and names:[8]

  • Late brother Ralph Gilbert, Gentleman of Uttoxeter, who died seized of estate in Uttoxeter, Tutbury, Woodhouses, Hanbury, Overfole, Nobot, Leigh, Checkley and Beamhurst in Staffordshire.
  • Friend William Thompson Yeoman of Grindley in Staffordshire.
  • Granddaughter Elizabeth the wife of John Bradgate a Surgeon of Tamworth in Warwickshire.
  • His unnamed father who built a seat in the North Isle of the middle of Uttoxeter church.
  • Son who died in the house which William built in the High Street of Uttoxeter where his son's widow was still living. This son later identified as being called William.
  • Kinswoman Margaret Robinson, spinster, who was living with William, to get the rent from the Royal Oak in Uttoxeter High Street inhabited by Edward Norris.
  • Niece Elizabeth Beardsley, widow.
  • Son-in-law Thomas Redfern, Dyer.
  • Sarah Wright, spinster of Hanbury in Staffordshire.
  • Mary the wife of John Spencer of Dunnisthorpe in Leicestershire.
  • Ann the wife of Thomas Smalley of Uttoxeter, Basketmaker and their children William, Elizabeth, Lettice and Ann.
  • Mary the wife of William Alcok of Doveridge Woodhouse in Derbyshire, and Mary's daughter Lydia.
  • Sarah the wife of Thomas Robinson of Dunstall in Staffordshire, and her daughter.

Plaintiffs: John Bradgate, apothecary of Tamworth, Staffordshire and Elizabeth Bradgate his wife, an infant (by her said husband), (said Elizabeth Bradgate being only daughter and heir at law of William Gilbert, deceased of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, who was brother and heir at law of Ralph Gilbert, deceased late of Uttoxeter, who died without issue; your oratrix being heir at law of said Ralph Gilbert and yout orator and oratrix being executors and devisees of said William Gilbert, deceased). Defendants: Sarah Wood, widow, William Wood, Elizabeth Wood, Samuel How and William Slater. Date of bill (or first document): 1724

20 Oct 1724:[10] Renunciation by William Thompson of Grindley, Staffs, of being an executor to the will of William Gilbert of Uttoxeter. That recited that his brother Ralph Gilbert had died intestate possessed of property in Uttoxeter, Tutbury, Tutbury Woodhouses, Hanbury, Oversole, Nobott, Leigh, Checkley and Beamhurst, and it was not clear what should come to him. Under William's will, messuage in Beamhurst or Checkley occupied by William Slator, called Moore's Old Wood or the Old Wood, worth £40 a year, go to his grand-daughter Elizabeth's husband John Bradgate for life, then to her. Other real estate to Elizabeth, or to raise portions for her younger children. Will proved by John Bradgate. Witnesses, including Mary Ball of the `Star' at Uttoxeter.

Plaintiffs: John Bradgate, apothecary of Tamworth, Warwickshire and Elizabeth Bradgate his wife (only child of Elizabeth Redferne, deceased late wife of Thomas Redferne of Uttoxer, Staffordshire, dyer, by Thomas Bowyer, her former husband; and niece and heir at law of William Gilbert, junior, deceased late of Uttoxeter). Defendants: Thomas Redferne and Elizabeth Redferne his wife, William Bowyer, gent, William Jarvis and George Cockayne, clerk. Date of bill (or first document): 1726
