DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Tom by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Tom:

Tom is my great grandfather on my maternal side. I can confirm most of above from information from my grandfather and mother except they have DOB 1859. Tom and Sarah had my grandmother Alice Gilbert in 1879 in Newton, Cheshire. Tom left the family and immigrated to NJ USA about 1885 where he married twice and had several children. He is buried in NJ with his 3rd wife Anna C Lohrmann. Following his trail was not easy since a transcriber of the 1910 census read his name as Foss Gilbert. Looking at the original, shows Tom, Jr. 2 lines below and the F in Foss is clearly the same as the T in Tom and the tail of a letter in the name above makes the T look like an F to a less than careful reader. This person decided Foss was more likely than Fom!
