Fridesweda, daughter of Francis Gilbert, esquire, was buried in Youlgreave 8 Aug 1604.^[1] Cox in his "Notes on the Churches of Derbyshire" claims that the entry in the original register read "Fridesweda Gilbert, daughter of Francis Gilbert, spinster, buried 8 Aug 1604", suggesting that she was a grown woman at the time of her death.

"On the floor of the south aisle (of the parish church of Youlgreave) is a small brass effigy of a lady in the costume of the commencement of the seventeenth century. The hair is brushed back high from the temples ; the skirts of the long sleeved gown, which is cut very low in front, project abruptly from the hips, and are left open in front to show the arabesque pattern on the petticoat. Below the figure are the following lines :

Fridsweda Gilbert to the grave Hath resigned her earthly part, Her soule to God, that first it gave, On angels wings went with her hart. A vertuous maide she livd and died, Hurtful to none but good to all, Religious, modest, hating pride, These vertues crowne her funerall.
