Amos' birth year of approx 1780 is based on his age at death on 9 Apr 1843 from the following Vevay, Indiana newspaper announcement: "Died in this place on Sunday evening last, Amos Gilbert Sr., in the 64th year of his age.[1]

Amos Gilbert's following 2 children named in his Will would have been from an unknown wife he married prior to about 1805 and, based on their birth places, possibly in New York.

  1. Elijah Gilbert born about 1805 in New York
  2. Amity (Gilbert) McMillen born about 1807 in New York

Amos Gilbert married Sally Magruder in Washington, Ohio on 22 Apr 1810.[2]

Sally is called Sarah in other records and in her father Norman Bruce Magruder's 14 Jan 1834 Will which names his grandchildren as Amos and Nancy Gilbert.[3]
Sally is named with Amos Gilbert in Switzerland County Deed Book entries in 1818. In 1820 Amos is named on his own. [4] Sarah is named again with Amos in 1823.

Children of Amos Gilbert and Sally Magruder:

  1. Nancy M (Gilbert) Welsh birth state not known and probably around 1812
  2. Amos Gilbert born in Indiana in about 1814

Amos Gilbert of Hamilton County is named in a Letter Patent signed by President James Madison for the acquisition of land in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1816. [5]

In the 1820 Census, Amos is in Vevay, Switzerland, Indiana with:

  • Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 1 (Son Amos)
  • Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 1 (?)
  • Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44: 2 (Himself and son Elijah)
  • Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1 (Daughter Nancy)
  • Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15: 1 (Daughter Amity)
  • Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 2 (? , ?)

Amos married Betsy Silvers in Switzerland, Indiana on 17 May 1827.[6]

Amos married Nancy Henry in Indiana on 7 Jul 1831[7] and in a 28 Feb 1832 Switzerland Land record, Amos Senior is named with his wife being called Nancy.

Is it the same Amos who married Betsy and Nancy, as his wife Sarah was still alive when her father made his Will in 1834?

At some point Amos married Agnes. Their children were:

  1. John M. Gilbert born about 1833 in Indiana
  2. William B. Gilbert born about 1834 in Indiana

In the 1840 Census, Amos is in Vevay, Switzerland, Indiana with:

  • Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 2 (? and ?)

His son Amos has a separate entry with his family but maybe they are the others included above.

The Will of Amos Gilbert of the Town of Veray, Switzerland County, was made on 28 Feb 1843 and probated by his wife Agness on 1 May 1843.[8] It names:

  • Wife Agness
  • Youngest children Nancy Welsh (formerly Gilbert), John M Gilbert, William B Gilbert
  • Son Elijah Gilbert
  • Son Amos Gilbert
  • Daughter Amity McMillen late Gilbert wife of John McMillen

Research Notes

His father is not known. The Y-DNA of his descendants does not match with the Y-DNA of the Gilberts of Bucks County, PA who include Thomas Gilbert whose Will was proved in 1783.

Hi son Amos gives his father's birthplace as New York in the 1880 census.

His son Elijah born in 1804/5 gives his own birth State as Ohio in the 1850 census and New York in the 1860 census.

From Blog: "We know a lot about Amos Sr., to include that he owned three slaves when he lived in Wood County, and had many dealings with his father-in-law, Revolutionary War veteran Norman Bruce Magruder. The extended family appeared to move down the Ohio river to Switzerland County, IN, where we know Norman is buried."[9]

An Amos Gilbert was resident in Augusta, Oneida, New York in the 1800 Census.[10] An Amos Gilbert was resident in Milton, Cayuga, New York in the 1800 Census.[11]

An Amos son of Elisha and Submit Gilbart was born in Otis, Berkshire, Massachusetts on 1 Sep 1778.[12] [13]

An Amos Gilbert Junior born in Hamden, Connecticut gave his age as 27 on 18 Oct 1806 for a New England Seamen's Protection Certificate.[14]
