Biography

John Gilbert was baptized on 14 August 1791 in Monzievaird and Strowan Parish, Perthshire. He was the son of Andrew Gilbert and Margaret Turnbull. ^[1]

He married Mary Ann in Crieff, Perthshire, in November 1847. The 1841 Census for West Crieff describes John as a labourer aged 45, born in Strowan, living with his wife Mary Ann also aged 45, and a number of children. ^[2] Because the 1841 census rounded adult ages down to the nearest five years, John, like his wife also described as aged 45 years, would have been older than that. John and Mary continued to live in Miller Street, Crieff, Perthshire, with various family members living with them over the years. ^[3]

In 1861 the household comprised John aged 70, Mary aged 72, John Gilbert (Jnr) aged 22, and Peter Hulker, 11.^[4]

Mary died in Crieff in 1863. John died four years later in 1867, aged 77, in Muthill, Perthshire.^[5]
