Mrs. Carl K. Smith, 73, of 157 N. Vine St., died yesterday at 1:15 p.m. at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She had been ailing the past year.

The former Violet Gilbert, she was born in this city, the daughter of the late Clinton and Mary Agnes Bitterman Gilbert, and lived in this city most of her life.

She was a member of Hazleton Trinity Lutheran Church and Lady Jeremiah Rebekah Lodge, where she served as a past noble grand. During World War 2 she was active in the nurses' aide program at Hazleton State General Hospital.

She is survived by her husband and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. W.L. (Jeanette) Butterwick, this city; Mrs. Lucy Eggert, Mrs. Andrew (Mary) Meritt and Mrs. Andrew (Virginia) Lindsey, all of Rochester, N.Y.; Clyde Gilbert, this city, and Earl Gilbert, Penndel. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
