Biography

Frederick was the son of John Gilbert and Hannah Fitzgerald.

Frederick married Jane Sharp, the daughter of Robert Sharp and Peney Shelton She is identified as Frederick's wife and the daughter of Robert Sharp and Philipina Shelton in the Chancery Court case of 1829-1833. Jane died before 1850. Her birth date is based on her marriage to Frederick, and her death date on the appearance of Frederick alone in the 1850 Census.

Census 1860 North District, Patrick, Virginia. Frederick age 68, no other persons in household. Real Estate $4500, Personal Property $10,000[2]


Frederick formed a relationship with his slave Nelly sometime around 1850 (based on the birth year of Mary Ann Gilbert.) Nellie is recorded as mulatto in census records.[citation needed]

On 18 January 1870, only a few weeks before he died, Frederick Gilbert deeded land to Nelly and her younger children. (See Stokes County Deeds, 11 January 1870.)

"This Indenture made and entered into this 18th day of January AD 1870 between Frederickk (sic.) Gilbert of the County of Stokes and the State of North Carolina of the first part and Nellie Gilbert, John Gilbert, Ellen Gilbert, Charles Gilbert, William Gilbert and Dearmon Monroe Gilbert all colored of the second part all of the County and State afore said witnesseth it that for and in consideration of the said feelings I have for the above named parties of the second part I do hereby give grant and convey and by these presents doth give grant and convey to the said parties of the second part the following tract piece or parcel of land⁠ ……"

Frederick died in Stokes County in February 1870, but was buried at a cemetery on his property in Patrick County. As he owned property in both Virginia and North Carolina there were two probate cases, one in each state. [citation needed]See possible research links below
