Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

Gilbert DNA Project Information on this family showing matching Gilbert Lines but not Joseph's father and ancestors who are as yet unknown. His parents are not Thomas Gilbert and Sarah Edmundson of Pennsylvania as shown in some on-line trees. His father is not Capt Thomas Gilbert.

Joseph Gilbert was reportedly born on 15 Jan 1755 in Mecklenburg, Virginia.[citation needed] He has come to be entered in on-line trees as Joseph Hiram Gilbert and probaly not for Hiram being a middle name but an alternative name. Hiram is not a name he uses in his Will but appears to have been used by many on-line trees based on information on his son James Gilbert and descendants written in Sketches Of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers where he is called just Hiram Gilbert and from Virginia or even England.

It is reported but unsourced that he served as a private on the Virginia line in the Revolutionary War. [1] [2]

Joseph married on 8 May 1784 in Shenandoah, Virginia, Nancy Ann [Lnu] Cheek, (widow of William Isiah Cheek) [citation needed]

Nancy Ann (Lnu) Cheek was born about 1760 in Virginia. She had married first about 1776 in Virginia to William Cheek and had at least one child: *William Andrew Cheek, born ca. 1778-79. Birthplace at Culpepper C. H. (sic.) or Bumcum (sic. Buncombe), N. Carolina, who died in Lee County VA on 17 October 1862 at age 81 years 6 months 22 days (year unclear in source [3]) and his wife Esther age 85 years 5 months 11 days, died 7 October of the same year. Esther was born ca. 1777-78

Children identified in his will are:

Children appearing in unsourced trees and commentaries who are not mentioned in his Will:

  • Harvey Gilbert b: 1800 in Virginia
  • William M Gilbert; b.ca.1803 in Virginia
  • Rebecca Gilbert Heston 1804–1875
  • Nancy Gilbert
  • Sarah Sally Gilbert
  • David J Gilbert
  • Elizabeth Gilbert

9 Feb 1799: A Joseph Gilbert received from James Fulkerson, SR 150 acres of land by grant lying on the north side of Wallen's Ridge corner of William McMillan's land for $46 3/4. [citation needed]

9 Mar 1801: Merry McGuire and Drucilla conveyed 60 acres lying on the north side of Wallen's Ridge being part of a tract Francis McGuire last lived on to Joseph Gilbert for $100.[citation needed]

He died after 17 Dec 1804, the date his will was signed when he was living in Lee County, Virginia, and is supposedly buried at the nearby Mulberry Gap Baptist Church Cemetery, which is just over the State border in Tennessee,[4] although other unsourced trees give his burial place as Thompson Settlement Family Farm, Lee County, Virginia.

Last Will and Testament of Joseph Gilbert:

My recent ancestry DNA test (ThruLines) results shows Joseph Lathrop and Sarah Edmundson Gilbert as potential 5th Great Grandparents, both 84 DNA matches with 8 and 268 cM. If true GGGGG Granny I think passed 1 year after Joseph Hirams birth. Took the Y DNA test will get the results soon, take care Frankie

Thomas Gilbert (1723-1788) is the Wikitree profile for Thomas Lathrop Gilbert and Sarah Edmundson Gilbert

On my recent Ancestry DNA results I did find a 4th-6th Cousin match with their GGGG being James Madison Gilbert if I found the right James Madison his Father was a John B Gilbert 31 years younger then Joseph Hiram from the same area a possible Younger Brother or most likely a Nephew? Also I know with the distant Cousin DNA match with all of the thousands of Cousins that it could also be a match from a different tree then the Gilbert,s. Just wanted to put it out there.

Myself being one of the youngest Grandchildren of the Ernest Roscoe family and only one with the Gilbert name feels that maybe a few theories or hearsay could put us on the right track, as Aunts and Uncles went so now are the Cousins. Can only pass on what I have been told, Passed down to one of my oldest Cousins, a story he was told often, one of our gggggg,s was in a debtors prison in England and like thousands more earned their freedom by coming to the Colonies in the 1700,s to help settle the land, most to Maryland then to other parts, if this is true could it be his Father? As said below in the past comments I feel that the writings were of someone describing his Grandfather because he knew him and not his Great, Came with a Young Joseph and siblings that went their own ways over time

Found this under Nancy Cheek Gilbert profile http:knoxcotn.org/old site/tnbaptists/gilbert thomas.htm(sketches of Tn,s pioneer Bapt Preachers.) Basically reads Thomas 1 of 10 children, son of Elder James Gilbert, Grandfather Hiram Gilbert came from England at an early date settling in Giles Co Va, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, Grandmother(Nancy?) a small dark skinned woman with long wavy black hair of German descent. Unfortunately no dates, had heard of the dark skinned woman with black hair from a cousin years ago when she was researching. If Hiram came from England as a child? Could of had more siblings, who knows. I am sure that this topic has already been researched but felt that I would put it out there anyways for others to ponder it.

Does anyone have a primary source that shows his middle name? Gravestone or marriage record perhaps? He did not use it when he made his Will.

Joseph Hiram, hope that we can find your origins, could you be the only child, orphanage? Straight from over there or from the north? I have been attempting to compare born dates with others of the same time giving an 20 year gap, or could you be the 5th child of the second wife if there is one? So many different possibilities, the 20 year gap could also bring about many things, anything from siblings to Uncles which in some cases the uncle is younger then the nephew depending on the situation of have many wives are involved if more then one. Will keep trying my different approach to match up time frames especially profiles around his ERA that are incomplete. Looking and searching until something matches or it could be right under our noses. Has been a stalemate for many years.

Thanks for your work on this page, Chris. Joseph is often misattributed to being from Bucks Co., PA, which is not accurate based on both Y-DNA testing and conventional research showing what became of the actual Joseph he's confused with.

OK. I have removed a lot of stuff that was copied in and confusing. Can contributors please add hard facts with sources clearly laid out to help develop this bio and go further back in generations if possible.

I have removed a lot of stuff from this bio. Part of our DNA project info had been pasted in which was confusing - the whole picture is at the link - and a whole unsourced tree had been added. What is needed now is for facts to be added with source links that work. I have removed the person shown as his father as it is uncourced for now.

To hear the info posted Nov 2019 that Joseph Hiram father Thomas Gilbert going back several Greats is too good to be true, several of us have met the brick wall on Joseph Hiram, hope that this brings great news to all the Gilbert,s and kin if true, have had conflicts before on if Thomas was Father. Which to keep an open mind there are many different Thomas Gilbert,s in this time frame.

If what I feel my part of the tree is correct Joseph Hiram would be my 4 Great Grandfather, James 3rd, John 2nd , Thomas Calvin 1st then of course Grandpa Ernest Roscoe. Grandpa oldest brother John Tipton"Tip" Gilbert who passed away just shy of 100 in 1975 and my closest side of the family always said that the Gilbert,s was married into the Clayton family, heard this often from my Aunts. Maybe word of mouth or whatever but what little research I,ve done mostly what is already wrote down I yet have seen the name Clayton from my 4th Great down, if a man born around 1875 and most likely knew his Grandfather might know what he,s talking about. Something that I always wanted to share because we are at a brick wall with Joseph Hiram.
