Tidbits about me & my journey to find my "roots":
When my Granny, Ida (Holmes) Gilbert, passed away in 1980, I was 12 years old. Its a benchmark time for me, not just because of her transition, but because afterward, we didn't really see the rest of my father's side of the family anymore. My mother, was an only child and from another country, so I didn't grow up with any family from that side either.
A little over 20 years ago, I decided there had to be more of us, on my father's side, than just the few I knew. That's was my "spark" into genealogy. However, at that time, there just wasn't many of my dad's family members around. Those who were, didn't recall much or just wouldn't speak about it.
I was told that my paternal grandmother's home burned not long after I was born, and of course, many of my father's things were still there at the time. What little photos I have of the family, such as the photo of Grandpap William Gilbert or my dad when he was young, were given to me by my uncle Gil & uncle Bob. Other cousins have also gifted me some copies here and there. I am thankful for each & every one picture shared with me more than anyone could ever know!
