Biography

Joseph was born about 1802. He is the son of Jonas Gilbert and Arminta Waters.

Research Notes

He and his brothers are often confused in records since they are Joseph, Jonas, John, and Joel. The one that is absolutely certain to be him is 1850 in Grimes, Texas, with his mother and siblings ^[1]. The family migrated north through the plains, crossed to Utah, and ultimately one or two of them made it to the gold fields of California. Not all lived that long and most stopped along the way.

The next record that seems like him is the 1870 census in Placer, California ^[2]. There is also a FindAGrave record but notes an unmarked grave and has no documentation, but it puts his burial in Auburn, Placer, California ^[3].
