The birth of Richard Thomas Gilbert was registered in the Hackney District in the 2nd quarter of 1895 with his mother's maiden name recorded as Harwood.^[1] His baptism is assumed to be the one for Thomas Gilbert at Hackney on 24 Jan 1896 with his parents named as Thomas Henry (a plasterer) and Sarah Gilbert of 1 Bull Alley.

Thomas Richard Gilbert, a bachelor RN sailor aged 23, married Charlotte Elisa Harwood, a spinster aged 23, at the Parish Church in West Hackney, by Licence on 25 Jul 1918, with the fathers named as William Henry Gilbert, a plasterer, and Richard Harwood, and with witnesses Sara Gilbert and Alice Sarah Harwood.^[3]
