Jacob was born on December 21, about 1881-1885, in Bialystok, Russia (now Bialystok, Poland). His name at birth may have been Jankel Gelbord. He was the son of Meyer Gilbert and Pesha "Lena" Zakine.
In 1891, when he was about nine years old, he resided in Zabludow, Russia (now Zabludow, Poland) and immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his parents and four brothers.
He was enumerated twice on the 1900 U.S. Census. Once in the household of his brother in Brooklyn, New York and once in the household of his father in Philadelphia.
Jacob was a leather luggage manufacturer. He married Bertha Dosick in September, 1904 in Philadelphia.
He passed away on February 7, 1947 in Philadelphia and is interred at Mount Sharon Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
