Cornelius Gilbert was born about 1842 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to Preston and Elizabeth Gilbert.
In 1860 the Gilbert family was living in Swansonville in southern Pittsylvania. Cornelius was the middle child of seven. Preston and Elizabeth's children:

In 1861, Cornelius enlisted in the CSA, and joined the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company D, as Corporal, Color Guard. He was in the assault on the Union entrenched on Malvern Hill overlooking Richmond on July 1, 1862. Wounded, he would die of injuries on July 21, 1862.
