James was born in 1859, the son of William Gilby and Isabella Primrose. [1]
He passed away in 1875, aged 16. [2] Report of Inquest: FATAL ACCIDENT. The Walhalla Chronicle states that on Thursday last an inquest was held at Drouin on the body of James Gilby, aged fifteen years, who had been found dead on the road to Jackson's Track on Tuesday, the 18th inst. From the evidence adduced it appears that the deceased had been sent from Edney's store at Drouin with a pack-horse load of goods, which he was to deliver to a man that he would meet on Jackson's Track. The lad not arriving at the expected time, Martin Lynch, the man to whom the load was consigned, proceeded to meet him on the road, and found him lying on his hands and face, under the horse's belly, quite dead. The loading was off the horse, and the surcingle was round the boy's shoulders. Lynch at once rode on to Ramsden's place, and returned with assistance, when the body was removed to Edney's store. Dr. Moore, of Walhalla, made the post mortem, examination, and in evidence deposed that fracture and dislocation, described by him, were the cause of death. The jury returned the following verdict : — "That deceased came by his death accidentally whilst in charge of a loaded pack-horse, when on his way to Jackson's Track."[3]
