James W. was 9 years old when the 1930 United States Census was taken. He was living in the household of his father, John D. Gilchrist, on 4th Street in Whistler, Mobile County, Alabama.[2]
J.W. was a messenger boy for Western Union. He rode a bicycle to deliver messages. On 12 August 1938, just a month shy of his 18th birthday, he was struck by an automobile at the intersection of Stone Street and St. Stephens Road in the Toulminville area of Mobile, Alabama. He was taken to the City Hospital in Mobile. He had suffered a skull fracture and died the following day at 12.45 p.m. He was buried on 14 August 1938 in the Whistler Cemetery in Mobile County, Alabama.[3][4]
