Albert Gilchrist is Notable.

Albert Waller Gilchrist was an American politician who served as the 20th governor of Florida.

He attended the Carolina Military Institute and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1882. Relocating to Florida, he served in the Florida Militia as a Brigadier General until 1898 and was a Captain in command of Company C, in the 3rd U.S. Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army, during the Spanish-American War. He also was a member of the Florida House of Representatives, (1893-95, 1903, 05). In 1908, he was elected as a Democrat the 20th Governor of Florida, serving until 1913. During his term, the Montverde Industrial School was founded, several new counties were created and he endorsed legislation that produced better health conditions. After leaving office, he served as a delegate to the 1924 Democratic National Convention. The Gilchrist Bridge on U.S. Route 41 and Gilchrist County, Florida, is named in his honor. Born in South Carolina, Gilchrist settled in Punta Gorda in Charlotte County to become an orange grower. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives 1893 and served in the Florida militia attaining brigadier general. In 1898 he was commissioned in the US Army at the outbreak of the Spanish-American war. He was elected governor in 1908 and is remembered for his efforts to improve public health.
