Biography

Barbara E. Gilchrist was born about 1859. (Year of birth is an estimate based on the 1870 United States Census.) She was the daughter of Bartley Merideth Gilcrease and Nancy E. McMullen. (Her family surname has been spelled multiple ways over the years.)

When the 1860 United States Census was taken, Barbart E. Gilcrease was one year old. She was living in the household of Merideth Gilcrease who was presumed to be her father. There were two other members of the household--Nancy E. Gilcrease was presumed to be her mother, and Allen Q. Gilcrease was presumed to be her brother. They were living in Clarke County, Alabama where her father was a farm laborer.^[1]

Barbara E. Gilchrist was eleven years old when the 1870 United States Census was taken. She was enumerated in the household of B. M. Gilchrist who is presumed to be her father. N. E. Gilchrist is presumed to be her mother. The other members of the household are all presumed to be her siblings, Allen Q. Gilchrist, Martha Jane Gilchrist, Andrew Gilchrist, Alexander Gilchrist and Mary La Vicy Gilchrist. They were living in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama where her father was a farmer.^[2]

When the 1880 United States Census was taken, she was enumerated as Barbry Gilchrist. She was twenty-two years old. She was living in the household of her father, Bart Gilchrist. Other members of the household were her mother, Nancy Gilchrist, and her siblings, Andrew Gilchrist, Elissa Gilchrist, Maryann Gilchrist, Joe Gilchrist, and Clarissa Gilchrist. They were still living in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama and her father was still a farmer.^[3]
