Biography

Lewis Gilcrease (aka Louis Gilchrist/Gilcrease) was born between 1795-1800 in South Carolina, United States. These dates are estimates based on the 1850 and 1860 United States Censuses. He was the son of Minor Kilcrease (>1755 - <1832) and Peggy (Jeter) Gilcrease (<1775 - <1830).

Lewis Gillcrease was enumerated on the 1830 United States Census in Lowndes County, Alabama. He was between 30-39 years of age. Living in the household were an adult female of the same age range, one white male child under the age of 5, and one male slave of the age range 10-23. Enumerated on the lines just above him were Nathan Gillcrease, Minor Gillcrease, and Elijah Gillcrease. This record hints at the possibility that Lewis was married once before his marriage to Sara (see below.)[1]

In 1832, Lewis Gilcrease was named as an heir in the Will of Minor Kilcrease which was probated in Lowndes County, Alabama.[2]

He was married to Sara in Montgomery County, Alabama before 1832. A record of their marriage was indexed at Ancestry.com but did not supply the date or location of their marriage. The date here was estimated based on the age of their oldest child on the 1850 United States Census.[3]

An examination of the images of the pages of the 1840 United States Census for Lowndes County, Alabama did not locate a record for him. He was not located in indexed 1840 census records anywhere.

On 07 October 1850, Louis Gilchrist was enumerated as head of household in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was a farmer. Other household members named were assumed to be his wife Sara and their six children. All of the children had been born in Alabama, the last about 1842, so they had probably moved from Alabama to Louisiana sometime after 1842.[4] In 1850, he was the holder of one slave, an eleven-year-old female.[5]

On 01 June 1860 Louis Gilcrease was issued a patent for land in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.[6]

On 20 September 1860, Louis Gilcrease was enumerated as head of household in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The other two members of the household were both males and are assumed to have been his sons. His wife Sara's absence from the record may indicate she died sometime between 1850 and 1860. Louis' occupation was recorded as Planter. The next household enumerated was that of Averilla Gates who was one of Louis' daughters. Just below her was recorded the household of Malcomb Gilcrease, one of Louis' sons.[7]

Lewis Gilcrease died after 20 September 1860. This was the date of the 1860 United States Census and the last known record for him.
