George W. "Jack" Gilcrease was born on 03 January 1848 in Louisiana, United States. He was the son of Thomas Gilcrease (abt.1798-) and Nancy (Wilder) Gilcrease (1812-). Note the alternate spelling of the family surname as Gilchrist in some records.[1]
On the 1850 United States Census for Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, Thos (probably abbreviation for Thomas) Gilchrist) was enumerated as head of household. Nancy Gilchrist of the household, was presumed to have been his wife. The other individuals listed were believed to have been their children. Listed among the children was G. W. Gilchrist who was 3 years old.[2]
United States Census records for 1860 and 1870 have not yet been located.
At the time of his death, Lucy Ann Carter, was named as his wife in his death records despite the fact that she had predeceased him by a few years. Their marriage had taken place about 1870 according to the 1900 United States Census.[1] He and Lucy married before 1880. They were the parents of at least five children. (FamilySearch has six listed but this was probably incorrect based on the 1910 United States Census record.)
George, Lucy, and four of their children were living in Natchitoches, Louisiana when the 1880 United States Census was taken. George's occupation was recorded as "driving team."[3]
G. W. and Lucy Gilcrease, along with three of their sons, were living in Ward 7 Provencal village, Natchitoches, Louisiana when the 1900 United States Census was taken. G. W. and Lucy had been married for thirty years. Lucy had given birth to 5 or 6 children--it is difficult to tell from the record which the enumerator intended. Four of the children were still living. G. W. was working as a farmer.[4]
George W. and Lucy Gilcrease were living in Police Jury Ward 7, Natchitoches, Louisiana when the 1910 United States Census was taken. According to this record, Lucy had given birth to only 5 children, 4 of whom were still living. It was also recorded that her marriage to George W. was her second marriage while it was his first. George was working as a farmer.[5]
George W. Gilcrease continued to live in Natchitoches Parish and was enumerated there on both the 1920 and 1930 United States Censuses. His wife Lucy was recorded with him in 1920 but not in 1930. Lucy had died in 1925. George W. was still working as a farmer in 1920 but no occupation was recorded for him in 1930 when he was 83 years old.[6][7]
George W. Gilcrease passed away on 02 January 1932 in Provencal, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.[1] He was buried in Provencal Cemetery, Provencal, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.[8]
