Biography

Thomas Percy Gilcrease was born about 1876. He was the son of Thomas Percy Gilcrease and Sarah Frances Calhoun. In 1880, four-year-old Thomas was living in the household of his older half-brother, M. B. Gilchrist in Clarke County, Alabama, United States.[1] It is presumed that his parents had died sometime after his birth but before 1880.

When his cousin Edmond Messer Gilchrist submitted an affidavit in 1935, in a case involving a the question of the ownership of land in Texas, his statement outlined his relations. Thomas P. Gilchrist Jr. was listed among them, and was said to be still alive. Edmond said, "...that Thomas P. (Tom) Gilchrist had seven children, two of which died in infancy; that two of his children, Bart Gilchrist and Mandy Gilchrist are dead; that Thomas P. Gilchrist, Jr., James Gilchrist and Frances Gilchrist are still living." A transcription of the full affidavit can be found in the profile for Edmond Messer Gilchrist.[2]

Research Notes

  • One family tree at Ancestry.com indicates Thomas Percy Gilchrist may have been married to Kate Williams, however there is no source attached to confirm the relationship. I found a record for the marriage of a Thomas P. Gilchrist and Kate Williams in Washington County, Alabama marriage records. The marriage took place on 24 Jul 1901. Bond was posted by T. P. Gilchrist and W. A. Payne.[3]
  • At FamilySearch.org there are several records for Thomas P. Gilchrist and Kate Williams associated with one or more children. Some of these records link to obituaries at GenealogyBank. One for a Mary B. Gilchrist Greco, native of Prichard, Mobile County, Alabama lists her parents as Kate Williams and Thomas P. Gilchrist. Siblings mentioned in the obituary are Genson Gilchrist, James P. Gilchrist, Wilson Gilchrist, Leon Gilchrist, Dan Gilchrist, Tommie Gilchrist, and Mrs. Fletcher Bringhurst.[4] Another for a Leon L. Gilchrist, gives parents Tom P. Gilchrist and Kate Williams, and siblings, Tommy Gilchrist, Mrs. Beatrice Greco, Mrs. Lillian Chapman, Percy Gilchrist, Genson Gilchrist, Dan Gilchrist, and Wilson Gilchrist.[5] There are enough similarities between these two to conclude they are siblings.
  • Based on the names mentioned in the point above, I located a 1920 United States Census record for the household of Tom Gildchrist, wife Kate, and eight children, Tommie Gildchrist, Lilian Gildchrist, Blese Gildchrist, Percy Gildchrist, Genson Gildchrist, Falloyan Gildchrist, Wilson Gildchrist, and Nelson Gildchrist. This family was living in Frankville, Washington County, Alabama.[6]
  • Also located a 1930 United States Census record for P. Thomas Gilchress household residing at Railroad Street in Prichard, Mobile County, Alabama. Other members of the household were his wife Kate, and sons Wilson and Leon. Living next door are Fletcher Bringhurst and his wife Lillian, who match up to names in a point above. The Railroad Street address matches up to the address in the 1931 Mobile City Directory mentioned in a point below.[7]
  • There are entries for a Thomas P. Gilchrist in Mobile City Directories for the years 1929 , 1930, 1931, and 1933, but there is no way to know if they are for this Thomas P. Gilchrist. In the 1931 and 1933 Directories he is listed with a wife named Katie. (Note, there is no entry for a Thomas P. Gilchrist in the 1932 Mobile City Directory.) These entries correlate with the 1930 Census record mentioned in the point above.[8][9][10][11]
  • Circumstantial evidence is indicative that the Thomas Percy Gilchrist profiled is the same as the Thomas Percy Gilchrist discussed in these Reseach Notes, but before committing to this conclusion, it would be helpful to find additional concrete evidence.
  • Unfortunately, at this time, I have no DNA matches to anyone who claims Thomas Percy Gilchrist Jr. as their ancestor through our most recent common ancestor who would be Thomas Percy Gilchrist Sr.
