Ann was born in 1858[1] in Ousethorpe, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised nearby in Eastrington. She was the daughter of John Gelder and Amelia Beverley.[2] By 1861 the family lived in Spaldington, Yorkshire.[3] In 1871 the Gelders farmed at Grove Cottage Farm in Howden, Yorkshire.[4]

She emigrated to New Zealand as a single servant age 19 from Yorkshire aboard the Piako arrived February 1878. [5]

In 1879 she married George Crow. [6]
