John Gildroy was born about 1847.^[1][2]

His birth place is inconsistently listed in the various census records, for example Long Benton, Norfolk in the 1851 census;^[1] Long Benton, Northumberland in the 1861 census; Newcastle, Staffordshire in the 1881 census.^[2] The earliest census record location of Long Benton is considered to be the most likely; the other dates seemed to be associated with where he was at the time of the census.

In the 1851 England census, John V Gilroy [Gildroy] (4) was living in Tanfield, Durham, England, with parents John Gilroy (46) and Ann Gilroy (44), and siblings Robert (18), James (13), William (8) and Mary Ann (6).^[1]

John Gildroy (25, son of John Gildroy) married Caroline Dutton (21, daughter of James Dutton) in 1875 in Northwood, Staffordshire.^[3]

In the 1881 England census, John Gildroy (34) was living in Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire, with wife Caroline Gildroy (29), and children John (4) and William H (0). He was working as a general labourer.^[2]
