Biography

Moses Gile/Guild was born in 1719 in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Joseph and Mary Heath Gile/Guild.

Moses married twice: first, in 1741, in Haverhill, to Eunice Johnson; and second in 1754, at Hampstead, New Hampshire, Mary Clark. (On March 16, 1754, the publishment of the marriage bond was recorded at Hampstead, New Hampshire as Mary Clarke.)

A petition to incorporate the town of Hampstead, written to the governor of New Hampshire on July 29, 1746, was signed by Moses Gile, among others.

Moses Gile and Eunice Johnson had a son, Moses, born 1742-3 and a daughter, Abigail, baptized 5 May 1745 in Haverhill, and two children in Hampstead, Ebenezer b Dec 3, 1749, and Hannah b Jan 22, 1752. Moses and Mary Gile had nine children, among them: Abner b 10 December 1756, Hampstead, Ephraim, Stephen, Thomas, James, Eunice, Nathan, and Mary. (Perhaps Amos?)

He served in the French and Indian Wars: in 1755 armies were sent against Fort du Quesne, Niagara, and Crown Point on Lake Champlain. More troops were needed; Moses Gile served in the 6th Company but saw no active service.

In 1755 he moved to Weare, NH, where he remained until 1770, when he sold his farm of 130 acres and went to Chester, Vermont. At a town meeting held there May 19, 1772, he was chosen fence viewer, and in 1779, is recorded as a Freeman.

"Moses Gile was the delegate from Chester at the Convention held at Westminster 7 Feb. 1775, and in the 3 day session, was chosen a member of a Committee of Correspondence "to keep the country informed of the doings of the Friends of Liberty in the different colonies".

Moses was a private , Joseph Little's Company, Vermont militia.

In 1781, he was Chester town collector, and at the time of his decease, which occurred Feb. 14, 1786, he was considered a prosperous man.

Buried in Main Street Cemetery. "In Memory of Moses Gile who departed this life 14 Feb. 1786 in the 66th year of his Age" Moses Gile's will can be found at the Windsor County Probate Court, N. Springfield, Vermont.

In Memory of Mary Gile, wife of Mr. Moses Gile, who died June 6th 1795 in the 67th year of her age.
