> Letters of Administration, undated, appoint Jerusha Gile and Stephen R. Gile administrators of the estate of Stephen Gile, "late of the Town of Sharon in the County of Schoharie as is alledged lately died Intestate." Much information was sent to Burleigh after publication by Thomas J. VanAlstyne, County Judge and Member of U. S. Congress. Included on Stephen was - "...he was large. Six feet two inches in height and proportionately built. Tradition declares him remarkably exceptional for great strength - activity and endurance. On reaching his new home [1800], he immediately contracted for purchase of some four hundred acres of land - plane and upland well watered and of strong soil. At his death in 1818 more than half of the primeval forest had been rendered tillable with long stretches of meadow and pasture and wide fields for cereals. An apple orchard of three hundred trees was full grown. There were three dwellings on the flats, a double house as homestead with another for his farm help. There were two very large barns, three sheds with stables, a cider mill and carriage house combined, a wood shed 80 x 25 feet, a pig pen with cribs and loft, other outhouses, and a running waters penstock in the house yard. This condition indicates the man, in enterprise, industry and thrift. He was a town magistrate and was uniformly consulted by his neighbours in their troubles and their business. He was personally popular with all who knew him and held in high esteem for social honor and fair dealing."

!Letter from Charles Burleigh files at NEHGS, to him from T. J. Van Alstyne - "Albany NY Feby 8th 1895 Chas. Burleigh Esq(?) Boston (?) Yours came duly to hand. I did not receive "the blanks" mentioned. I send herewith the record of grandfathers family. Stephen Gile (#113, Part 2. Giles genealogy) was born at Ware NH - he was about seven years old when Moses his father removed to Chester Vt. He remained there until the early spring of 1800, when he removed with his family to whatis now known as West Richmondville, Schoharie Co. NY. He in mean time had married Jerusha Caryl of Hopkinton, Mass. His wife come of good family. Of the "personale" of Stephen I may say in stature he was large. Six feet two inches in height and proportionately built. Tradition declares him remarkably exceptional for great strength - activityand endurance. On reaching his new home, he immediately contracted for purchase of some four hundred acres of land - plane and upland well watered and of strong soil. At his death in 1818 more than half of the primeval forest had been rendered tillable with long stretches of meadow and pasture and wide fields for cereals. An apple orchard of three hundred trees was full grown. There were three dwellings on the flats, a double house as homestead with another for his farmhelp. He was personally popular with all who knew him and held in high esteem for social honor and fair dealing. His wife was the best possible type - the intellectual, amiable and truewoman. For many years she was a member of my fathers family, and merited the high regard with which her memory is cherished. The daughters married well - the Zehs husbands of the two eldest were each possessed of large and desirable bottom farms. The homestead more by reason of the age & condition of the other children became the property of Van Alstyne. Not withstanding his profession demanded & deserved his entire time & attention. I have given a more detailed recital than was perhaps necessary. I have spoken of the man, as represented to me by people who knew him well. I knew the grandmother personally, and can not magnify her worth by words. If you shall need any further information for your purposes if I may be able I will be pleased to furnish it. Please acknowlege receipt of this. Yours respectfully, T. J. Van Alstyne."
