"Valerius Cincinnatus Giles was born in Shelby County, Tennessee, onthe 26th day of January, 1842. He was the son of Edward Stanhope Gilesand Nancy Jackson Giles. When he was seven the family brought him toTexas where they settled on a farm just outside of Austin. The pioneerlife of 1849 did not offer him much in the way of formal education, buthe was a voracious and tireless reader, the son of another such. Hisfather was devoted to the classics, as witness the names of the familydogs: Brutus, Cassius, and Caesar.
Val C. was reared in the best tradition of the Old South, to which headded the adventurous spirit of the new Southwest. He never stopped hisreading and was a lifelong student of Napoleon Bonaparte whom he admiredgreatly.
At Austin, in 1873, Mr. Giles married Miss Lou Barnhart, granddaughter ofJohn W. Smith, the last man to be sent out of the Alamo for help. TheGileses had two children, Val C. Junior, who died in 1940, and AnnieBarnhart Giles, who still resides at the old Barnhart homestead near theUniversity.
