Born

Hartley[2] Kangaroo Island William's father, William Giles Sr, was appointed Manager of the South Australian Company's post at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, in the British Colony of South Australia. William Jr was around 23 and was offered the position of accountant. The colony was only twelve months old when the family arrived and living conditions were primitive, the older sons being required to live in tents. Eventually it was decided to build the capital city at a location on the mainland, and all employees of the Company moved there. Marriage On the 11th April, 1848, William married Margaret Horne McFarlane, third daughter of Allan McFarlane Esq, of Glensloy. They were married at St James Church, Mt Barker, South Australia.[3] Occupation In London prior to 1837, he was clerk at the London and Westminster Bank. When his father was offered a position by the South Australian Company in South Australia, William Jr was offered an accountant's position[4] In the late 1840s he lived at Kanmantoo, where the South Australian Company owned a copper mine. At the same time he leased thousands of acres of Crown land in the Kanmantoo and Monarto areas.[5] Public Life In 1859 William Giles Jun. was a member of the local Council at Nairne, while residing at Kanmantoo, in South Australia. [6][7] William Jr supported his father's view on the independence of the church and secret ballots and in one report the two of them grilled a candidate for election on these topics. [8]Died
