George Washington Giles is first recorded in the 1850 census of Pittsylvania, in the home of parents James and Elizabeth Giles. The following children noted:
Father James would pass away in 1853.
In 1860, George and first wife Mary were living in Chatham, Pittsylvania, next to George's widowed mother Elizabeth. His sister Rebecca, and his brother William living with mother Elizabeth.
George enlisted in the CSA on August 21, 1862 in Danville, joining the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company D. His wife Mary died about a month later.
From August through December of 1864, George was sick and in the Danville hospital. He returned to duty, and shortly thereafter(January 31, 1864) George remarried to Eliza Ann Collie.
The 1880 census of Callands, Pittsylvania shows George with second wife Eliza Ann and seven children:
