The following is contributed by Allison Basile: "The book was co-writtenby Eugene but this part is written after his death and appears in theappendix. Eugene's grandparents were Edward Stanhope Giles and NancyJackson on his father's side, and Frederic Jourdan and Harriet Bachman onhis mother's side. His parents were William Leroy Giles and Sallie A.Jourdan."

"APPENDIX I.
DREAM – OR NIGHTMARE?
The Cemetery
The current history of Frederic and Harriet’s homestead is involved, legally, with four documents concerning their plantation cemetery – thefuture of which became as much an obsession with Eugene as the botanicalgarden to be dedicated to his mother and the preservation of the oldhouse on the creekside. More so, perhaps, since, exclusive of the lot inthe Fiskville Pioneer Cemetery where his Giles grandparents and hislittle brother Willie are buried, it contains all of his immediatefamily’s graves – plus nine others. When two of the documents werewritten and signed, his sister Laura, eleven years his senior, hadalready faded into the twilight zone obscuring reality that he thought ofas “the family curse.”
The cemetery does not lie within the seventy acres of the Jourdan-BachmanPark. It lay in the division of properties that fell to Mary CatherineJourdan Alford – Sprinkle’s heirs and the first pertinent clausepertaining to it is in the deed of C. F. Alford and wife to B. R. Payton,September 4, 1928; Deed Book 417, p. 382:
Grantors reserve from the land here-in conveyed (181.94 acres) thegrave-yard containing one half an acre of land, with the roadway thereto.
The second document involved is the Eugene and Laura Giles deed ofthe old homestead to the Heritage Society of Austin, February 24, 1956,wherein
It is expressly stipulated
(3) That the grantee herein, the Heritage Society of Austin, Inc., shallbe the custodian of the cemetery near the road on the old C.F. Alfordfarm (at this time owned by B.R. Payton) and known as the FredericJourdan Family Cemetery.
(5) The Botanical Garden located in the Jourdan branch on this tract isto be dedicated To the Memory of Mrs. Sallie Jourdan Giles and thePioneer Women of her generation.
(6) If this land herein conveyed shall be abandoned by the HeritageSociety of Austin, Inc., for its original purpose and shall no longer beused as a memorial park, title shall vest in the City of Austin to beused for its original purpose as a memorial park in perpetua.
There is much litigation in Texas courts today (1979) as to whose isthe authority over and whose is the possession of burial grounds andcemetery plots. According to legal advice so far obtainable by the writerof this book, such authority and such possession rests with thedescendants of those buried therein which would throw the question opento any descendant of Frederic and Harriet Bachman Jourdan, and of FannieButler Thurman, minded to raise it. The sixteen graves involved are thoseof:
1881 Harriet Emily Bachman Jourdan
1881 Mary Catherine Jourdan Alford-Sprinkle
1883 Edwin Nicholas Jourdan
1887 Frederic Jourdan
1890 Fannie Butler Thurman
1890 Baby Ernest Thurman
1897 Sarah Ann Norman Jourdan Giles
1910 Alice Ophelia Giles
1913 William Pannell (Billie) Jourdan
1918 John Bachman Jourdan
1923 William Leroy Giles
1929 Flora Cornelia Giles
1944 Josephine Melissa Butler Jourdan
1961 Laura Lewis Giles
1974 Eugene Victor Giles
Of the descendants of Fannie Butler Thurman – the death of William(Buddie) Thurman (unmarried) was reported from West Texas before 1920.Neither married names nor whereabouts of his five sisters are in anyfamily record.
The third document, Eugene’s will (No. 36,325 - Volume 593, p. 819)dated July 24, 1958 reads:
I direct that upon my death that I be buried in the Frederic JourdanFamily Cemetery located about five miles Northeast of the City of Austin,Travis County, Texas, and that a suitable head-stone be placed at thehead of my grave and another of similar nature at the grave of my sisterLaura L. Giles, upon her death.
I direct that modest head-stones be placed at the graves of mygrandparents, Edward Stanhope Giles and Nancy Jackson Giles, whoseremains are buried in the Cemetery at Fiskville, Texas.
The fourth document, also dated July 24, 1958, is the TrustIndenture between Eugene, nominally his sister Laura, and the AustinNational Bank. After providing for care of brother and sister duringtheir remaining years, and the manner there-of; for specific bequests toindividuals and the discharge of any debts against the estate; one findsthat
All the rest and residue... shall... be paid over to the HeritageSociety of Austin, Texas, or to the City of Austin, Texas, which ever atthe time of final distribution hereunder may hold title to the ...Park... which includes the Frederic Jourdan Family Cemetery (amis-statement of fact, as shown by the Alford deed to Payton)...
That said Frederic Jourdan Family Cemetery is to be made available forpurposes of last interment of those members of said families who dodesire to have their remains placed therein, and said Heritage Society ofAustin, Texas, or said City of Austin, is to maintain such cemetery forall time.
At some place in said Frederic Jourdan Cemetery there is to be placed asmall Memorial Marker showing the names of those members of said familieswho may be buried in other places and particularly the names of thefollowing person: Lewis L. Giles... William Jourdan... (both died in theCSA) Willie Giles, infant brother of the donor...

Gilesburg Store - 1897
Built in 1994 as a set for a television movie, Lantern In Her Hand, this building is a close replica of Eugene V. Gilesą general-merchandisestore that operated in this area from 1897 until 1901. Giles' store waslocated less than a mile northwest of this location in Gilesburg, a tinysettlement named for his family. The town included a store and postoffice, and a blacksmith shop and some corrals.
Appearing much like this building, and typical of many in late 1800sTexas, Gilesą store was of rough frame construction and measuredapproximately 16-by-20 feet, with a front gallery porch. He and severalneighbors built it themselves. The porch had no steps.
On its façade were two signs: łGroceries˛ and łGilesburg Post Office.˛As assortment of milk cans, benches and bagged goods ready for saledecorated the porch.
Giles moved his store in 1902 to the more established, but still tiny, community of Sprinkle, just southeast of Pioneer Farms. He operated theJackson & Giles store there for several years, just across the streetfrom the Barr Mansion, a substantial Victorian home that still stands atthe corner of Springdale and Sprinkle roads.
