Biography

Note: John was probably a Baptist, but none of the records found that relate directly to him confirm that.

John Giles was born in about 1765 (calculated from his death certificate), probably in Reading, Berkshire, the son of John Giles and Mary.

On 31 Aug 1789, in St Mary's Parish Church, Reading, John married Sarah Collier, the daughter of Robert Collier and Mary Clark. ^{[1] [2]}

Sarah died in Feb 1802 and was buried on 21 Feb 1802 at Kings Road Baptist Church, Reading burial ground. ^[3]

In 1841, John was living in St Mary, Reading (address not legible). His occupation was "Ind" - presumably of Independent means. He was living with Charles & Martha Vize, possibly as a lodger. There was also an Edmund Cousins, a J(ourneyman?) Coach Smith living at the same address. ^[4]

In 1851, John, aged 86, was living in 18, Spring Gardens, Reading St Giles, and was described as a "Retired Hairdresser". He was living with his son Robert and family. ^[5]

On 20 Apr 1853, John made his will. At the time he was living at 14 Spring Gardens. He appointed his daughter Martha Golding and a William Hodges, of 12 Oxford St, Reading, who was probably John's solicitor, as executors of his estate.

On 17 Mar 1856, John died, aged 91, at 14, Kiln Road, Reading of "Old Age (Certified)". His death was registered by Mary Giles - probably his daughter in law and the wife of Robert Giles.

On 23 Mar 1856, John was buried in Reading. Unfortunately, the record found (originating from FamilySearch) doesn't indicate at which cemetery / burial ground this occurred. ^[6]

Probate to John's estate was granted to "Martha Golding (wife of Edward Golding) the Daughter" and William Hodges. ^[7]
