George was born in 1910 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire, the son of George Giles and Eliza Jane Giles formerly Harris. [1]
In the 1911 census the Giles family was living at 24 Rydding Square, Hill Top, West Bromwich. Father George, aged 35, was a socket maker. Mother Eliza Jane was also aged 35. Siblings were James, aged 13, a socket heater; Esther aged 11, Maria aged 5 and Martha aged 3. George was aged 6 months. Also living with them were two boarders named George Cooper, aged 73, a stoker, and Joseph Davis, aged 74, a miner. [2]
In 1921 the family was living at 75 Rydding Square. George was aged 10 years. [3]
George Giles married Annie Langford in 1935 at St James’ Church, West Bromwich. [4]
This couple had two children.
Son Stanley William Giles died in 1939 in infancy. [5]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time George and Annie were residing at 141 Dial Lane, West Bromwich. George, born 15 October 1910, was aged 28. He was an iron moulder. Annie, born 29 March 1915, was aged 24. She was a press worker. Doreen, born 21 August 1936, was aged 3. Her surname was later amended to Howells, her married surname. [6]
Annie Giles died in 1940 aged 25 years. [7]
George Giles remarried to Annie Hallard in 1943 at West Bromwich. [8] Annie was a widow with one child.
George Giles died in 1976 aged 66 years. [9]
He was buried on 23 September 1976 at Heath Lane Cemetery, West Bromwich [Section T Grave no. 18128]. The burial register further recorded George died at Hallam Hospital, West Bromwich but his usual address was 15 Jubilee St. He was aged 65 years. The owner of the grave was Annie Giles. [10]
Annie Giles died in 1987 aged 77 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 6 July 1910. [11]
She was buried with husband George Giles at Heath Lane Cemetery, West Bromwich [Section T Grave no. 18128]. The burial register further recorded Annie died on 25 July 1987 at 107 Devon Rd, Woods Estate, Wednesbury but her usual address was 2 Lindsey Gardens, Hateley Heath, West Bromwich. She was aged 77 years. [12]
