Biography

The daughter of Prescott Giles and his first wife, Lemira (Stratton) Giles, Susan Giles was born in Athol, Massachusetts in 1832.^{[citation needed]} Her mother passed away in 1844 and her father moved west, remarrying in 1846. Susan and her siblings, seven of them, went to live with various family members.^{[citation needed]} Susan Giles married Dwight Lorenzo Moore (1833-1899), the son of George Washington Moore and Milla Shepardson, marrying in Petersham, Massachusetts on November 24, 1853^[1] and having three known children together:

1. Julia Marie Moore (1853-1857)
2. Rosalind Susan Moore (1858-1938)
3. Anna Lemira Moore (1861-1933)

They made their home in Athol, Massachusetts^[2] where in 1860, her husband worked as a teamster.^[3] The couple separated or divorced; in 1870, her husband lived in Weston, Massachusetts, boarding there while working as a teamster, while Susan and the children lived in Westport, Massachusetts.^[4] In 1880, her husband lived in Athol, Massachusetts while Susan and her children had moved to Iowa, where her father had taken up residence, residing in McGregor Township, Iowa,^[5] where both of her daughters, Rose and Anna, worked as school teachers. By 1900, she had followed her father and his family to Wisconsin, residing that year in Madison,^[6] where Rose worked as a school teacher and Anna worked as a typewriter. By 1905, her daughter, Rose, had married and her daughter, Anna, had become head of the household in Madison.^[7][8]

Susan Moore passed away in Madison, Wisconsin around the age of 81 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison.^[9]
