Biography

Joseph Giles was probably born at Adderbury in Oxfordshire, probably in 1809. [1] [2]

Joseph Giles, bachelor, and Ann Padbury, spinster, both of the parish, were married at Banbury parish church on 25 December 1831. The witnesses were called William and Mary Padbury. [3]

In 1851 Joseph Giles was living in Monument Street in Banbury with his wife Ann and their children. (There is another member of the household, a 65 year old called John Giles.) His age was given as 42, implying a birth date in 1808 or 1809. His birthplace was given as Neithrop, Oxfordshire. He was a plush weaver. [1]

In 1861 Joseph was living in Monument Street with his wife, their children, and a 74 year old lodger called John Padbury. His age was given as 52, implying a birth date in 1808 or 1809. His birthplace was given as Adderbury, Oxfordshire. He was a plush weaver. [2]

His wife Ann died in 1867.

Joseph Giles died at Bath Cottages, Neithrop, on 27 August 1868. [4] [5]

(His widowed daughter Mary Ann Boss lived at Bath Cottages at the time of the 1871 census, with 2 of her younger brothers.)

Research Notes

There seems to be no reason to doubt that the 1851 and 1861 census entries attached to this profile both refer to the same person. So one (at least one) of the birthplaces recorded must be incorrect. The most obvious reason for choosing "Adderbury" over "Neithrop" is that it is less likely to be attributed by accident to someone living at Neithrop, the rest of whose family was born in Neithrop.

There is a baptism at Adderbury of a Joseph Giles, baptised on 8 February 1809, as the son of Thomas and Sarah Giles. His age would be consistent with those recorded in the censuses. [6] I would not consider that a confirmed link at present.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
