He was born about 1927 in Willis, Montgomery County, Texas, USA and his parents were Rotea Love Gilford and Viola Mae James Gilford [1] (1910-1994).
His parents moved the family from Texas to San Francisco, California. He graduated from Polytechnic High School, where he was a football hero.
Rotea James "Gil" Gilford first married about 1951 in San Francisco, California, USA to Patricia Mary Quintal [2] (1932-2013).
He worked as a Muni bus driver and a bridge toll taker before he joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1960. He distinguished himself as a highly decorated San Francisco, California police officer.
In 1964 he became the department's first black homicide inspector. He was the first cop there to mobilize the city's gay community to help catch a serial killer who was preying on homosexual men in 1973 (Zebra Murders).
He was divorced in 1973 [3] and by 1976, Rotea James "Gil" Gilford had married secondly to Judith "Judi" E. Chandler.
He never ran for anything but was involved in politics for a long time.
He died on 14 Mar 1998 at his Hayes Valley home in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA [4] and was cremated. [5]
