Biography

Ethel was born 14 Mar 1902 and baptised 30 March 1902 St. James Church Latchford, Cheshire, England the daughter of Thomas Gilks Provision Dealer and Eleanor Annie Harrison of 253 Knutsford Rd, Latchford^[1]

18 October 1926 William Woodcock (28) Bachelor Salesman of 7 Percy Street, Nelson son of Samuel John Woodcock Grocer married Ethel Gilks (24) Spinster of Woodlands, Latchford daughter of Thomas Gilks Grocer at Christchurch, Latchford, Cheshire, England Witnessed by Thomas Gilks, Mabel Lawton^[2]

At the time of her marriage she was Personal Assistant to the manager of Richmonds Latchford, a gas cooker factory near the Manchester Ship Canal. ^[3]

In 1939, William and Ethel lived at South Ash, 509 Stockport Road, Thelwall. He was a commercial traveller for Kenyons selling Engineers Stores and Contractor’s tools. He was noted as an air raid warden 17210 with Cheshire ARP. They had a son (name withheld) Ethel’s surname overwritten Fayrer^[4]

1969 Ethel married Cyril E V Fayrer 1969 Isle Of Wight, Hampshire, England ^[5]

She died aged 79 on 4 Aug 1981 whilst living at Boundary Oaks, West Green St Helens Ryde Isle of Wight. She was cremated locally and her ashes removed to All Saints Churchyard, Thelwall, Cheshire where she was buried with her first husband under the name ‘Ethel Woodcock’ at a service dated 26 Aug 1981.^[6][7][8]

Research Notes

According to a family contact, she moved in 1960 from 509 Stockport Road to the Isle of Wight to be near her son and family. She had retired from being the PA to the Managing Director of Warrington Radiation and Gas Stove Company. She died in Gosport.
