Edward Gill was born in Somerset, England.

Edward Gill was born in the December quarter of 1845 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England to Henry Gill and Mary Jane Baker. His birth was registered in the October to December quarter in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

On 7 June 1853 he emigrated to Nelson NZ by the ship Maori, with his father and sisters Emily & Mary. A passage for his mother was booked but she did not travel in the end.

Edward married Mary Scadden in New Zealand in 1865[1]

He was a farmer at Wakapuaka.

Edward and Mary had children, namely: Edward Howard Gill and Beatrice Mary (Gill) Dodson

Edward acted as the executor for his father's will.[2]

Men from all round the district served on the Suburban North Road Board , responsible for all roads in the area apart from the main highway. Edward Gill of Atawhai was the Board's overseer, clerk and returning officer for 40 years. His association with the roads went back at least to 1872 when he is recorded as having secured a small contract connected with the construction of the original road from Happy Valley to the Whangamoa Saddle.

Edward died April 18, 1923 at Nelson, Nelson City, Nelson, New Zealand. He is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery. Find A Grave Memorial # 169186590.
