Biography

F. Joseph Gill was born 23 Aug. 1827 and died Oct. 9, 1921 in Jefferson Co., AL. On Jan. 25, 1874 he married Martha Eaton a daughter of James Eaton.

Except for his brother John L. Gill, Jr., Joseph was the only one of his family to enlist for the Civil War. He first entered the service as a Private in Oct. 1862 at Talladega, AL in the 1st Engineering Corps, Co. B of the Confederate Army and continued on until the close of the war. During the war, he gained the rank of Sergeant.

Joseph and Martha Eaton Gill had the following children: 1. James Edward Gill, b. ca. 1876; d. 7 June 1967; m. Willie Isabelle Amberson, born 1886, died 14 May 1961 2. John Henry Gill, b. 13 Oct. 1877; d. 2 March 1936 in Jefferson Co., AL. He married Sally Faucett 1880-1946. 3. Jennie Gill, b. 3 Dec. 1880; d. 11 Dec. 1920. On 24 Dec. 1908 she married John James Swinwood, b. 26 Jan. 1877 in Newcastle, Staffordshire, England; d. Feb. 1938 in Walker Co., AL. 4. H.W. Gill, Marbury, AL, tanner. 5. Mary Josephine Gill, b. 28 May 1883; d. 11 June 1980; m. Marshall Dewitt Rogers, b. 2 Sept. 1878; d. 22 April 1960
