In 1820, James Gill, probably the male listed as age 26-45 (he was 26), lived with two males under 10 (one was probably his son, Coleman, age 2, but the other is unknown), a female from 26-45 (probably his wife, Trefis, age unknown), and two females under age 10 (identities unknown). In 1840, James Gill, age 50 to under 60 (he may have been only 46), lived with one female, age 40 to under 50 (probably his wife, Jane, actual age unknown), one male, age 10 to under 15 (probably his son, George R., age 12), one female, age 20 to under 30 (probably his daughter, Fanny, actual age unknown), two females, ages 15 to under 20 (probably his daughters, either Elizabeth, age 18, Mary Catherine, age 17 and Maria, age 16. One of them was probably working in another household as a servant), one female, age 10 to under 15(probably his daughter, Elizabeth Jane, age 14) and one female, age 5 to under 10 (probably his daughter-by-his second-wife, Julia, age 7). He was employed in agrigulture. In 1845, James Gill, his wife, daughter Elizabeth Putnam and her daughter, Martha and two other Gill children moved onto Jackson's land. Gill paid rent and worked on Jackson's farm. In 1850, James Gill, age 52, was the head-of-household and could not read or write. His married daughter, Elizabeth Putnam, lived with him with her three children but without her husband. James's son, George R. Gill also lived with him, with possibly his wife, Juliett, and his child, Apolonia. Juliett and Apolonia Gill's relationship to James and George R. is not determined at this time, however. They may be children of James. In 1860, James Gill, age 66, lived with his daughter, Elizabeth Putnam and her five children. He could not read or write. James Gill was 88 years old at his death.
