MRS. MARGARET JANE COWAN A highly esteemed resident of Cundletown, in the person of Mrs. Margaret Jane Cowan, passed away suddenly at her home at 11 p.m. on Monday. During the day Mrs. Cowan had attended to the household washing and appeared to be in her usual health, but at 10 p.m. she suffered a heart attack. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gill and was born at Cundle 81 years ago. Upon attaining womanhood she was married to the late David Cowan, who was a schoolteacher. After having charge of the schools at Kincumber and Coopernook he was moved to Dingo Creek, where he passed away over 40 years ago. Mrs. Cowan then made her home at Cundle, where she resided until her death. Deceased was a warmhearted and charitable lady who won for herself a wide circle of genuine friends. Although most of her own children pre-deceased her, she found an outlet for her maternal love by rearing three grandchildren who were bereaved in early life. The only surviving child is Mr. Stan. Cowan, of Newcastle. The children who predeceased her were William and Thomas (Cundle), Ellen (who died at Kincumber at the age of 12 years), and Mrs. Roger, wife of the Rev. W. W. Roger, who frequently visits the Manning. The surviving brothers and sisters are Messrs. Andrew and E. J. Gill (Dumaresque Island), David Gill (Kolodong), Mrs. King (Sydney), Mrs. Carpenter (Sydney), Mrs. Tom Newton (Chatham), and Miss Mary Gill (Taree). One brother, Henry, died in Sydney, and two sisters predeceased her, viz., Sarah, who died at an early age, and Miss Laura Gill, who passed away at Taree. The funeral is to move from her late home at Cundle at 1 p.m. to day (Wed.) for the Dawson cemetery. Rev. S. A. Pill will conduct the service and Mr. W. T. Howard has the funeral arrangements in hand. |
