Wedding description

Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser (NSW) - Friday 11 September 1903 - page 2[3]

Orange Blossoms.

WALKER—GILL. A very pretty wedding was celebrated on Wednesday, the 2nd September (says the 'Manning River Times') at St. Thomas' Church of England, Cundletown, the contract parties being Mr. Alexander Binning Walker, eldest son of Mr. A. B. Walker, of Goulburn, and Miss Florence Gill, third youngest daughter of the late Andrew Gill, of "Ferndale," Dumaresque Island, Manning River.

The church was profusely and beautifully decorated for the occasion by friends of the bride - loads of ferns, staghorns, and greenery being hung throughout the building. Before the hour fixed for the ceremony the church was crowded to the doors. As the bride entered the aisle on the arm of her guardian (Mr. E. Basham, J.P.), the choir sang "The voice that breathed o'er Eden." She was attended by her sister, Miss Laura Gill and wore a handsome gown of ivory satin, trimmed with mouselline de soie, and the customary veil and wreath of orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of friezias, tuberoses and azaleas, and wore an opal and pearl bangle, the gifts of the bridegroom.

The bridesmaid wore cream canvas voile, with green applique and coffee coat; cream picture hat, trimmed with chiffon and pink roses. She carried a shower bouquet of golden daffodils, and wore a gold bamboo bangle, the gifts of the bridegroom. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. H. Phillips, Rural Dean of the Manning, and the bridegroom was attended by Mr. E. Lapthorne, of Narandera, as groomsman.

After the ceremony was concluded, Miss Lee played the "Wedding March" as the bridal party left the church. As the happy couple drove off they were deluged with rose leaves and rice. A reception was held immediately afterwards at 'Ferndale,' where Mr. and Mrs. Walker were made the recipients of very hearty congratulations from a large circle of friends. A number of telegrams of congratulation were also received from all parts of the State.

Before Mr. and Mrs. Walker took their departure, the Rev. R. H. Phillips, in a few well-chosen words, expressed the high esteem in which both were held on the Manning, and wished them long life and prosperity in their new home. The appreciation they had earned so worthily on the river, he felt sure, would follow them where ever they went. Mr. Basham, Mr. L. O. Martin, and Dr. Patrick also joined in good wishes for the future happiness and prosperity of Mr. and Mrs. Walker - Mr. Walker briefly responding.

The bride and bridegroom then started off on their honeymoon, after which they will reside in Narandera, where Mr. Walker is stationed as accountant in the local branch of the Commercial Banking Company. The bride's travelling dress was of grey silk voile, cream floral hat en suite.

The presents, which were numerous and valuable, included, — Miss M. Gill, silver-mounted oak biscuit barrel ; Miss L. Gill, silver sugar scuttle; Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Walker, senr.
