Biography

Phoebe (Phebe in record), daughter of the widow of Benjamin Gillam, was baptized on 2 Jul 1738 in Middletown.[1] A second date, which also says baptism, appears in the same record, as 2 May 1738, and may be her birth date.

Research Notes

There is considerable confusion in the records of Phoebe and her sister Sarah. According to a transcription of records from Barbour, both married John Hotchkiss, Phoebe on Feb. 14, 1756, and Sarah on Jan. 26, 1761. If that is the case, it is likely that Phoebe died before January 26, 1761.[2][3] However, I cannot find any marriage for Phoebe or Sarah to John Hotchkiss in Wallingford. Sarah was, however, certainly married to John Hotchkiss as evidenced by his will, but whether she was Sarah Gillam/Gillum remains to be seen. The only firm clue is the naming of a grandson as John Gillum Hotchkiss (see below).

Sarah (relict of John) Hotchkiss's death is reported on 4 Mar 1812 in the Connecticut newspapers.[4]

John Hotchkiss's will, dated 29 Jan 1794, mentions his wife Sarah and also a grandson named John Gillum Hotchkiss "who bears my name", amongst other children and further unnamed grandchildren. Probate took place on 19 Nov 1794.[5][6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Phoebe by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Phoebe:
