Biography

John, the son of carpenter John Gillam and his wife, Sarah Terrell, was born at Bolney in Sussex in 1799. He became a carpenter and on the 10th of June 1823 at St Peter, Cowfold married Elizabeth Dowlen, daughter of Charles Dowlen of Cowfold and his wife, Ann West. ^[1] John was baptised as an adult at St Peter, Cowfold, on the 9th of July 1837 aged 38. ^[2]

By the 1841 census he was living at Denwood Cottages, Cowfold with Elizabeth and five of their children. ^[3] John gave up carpentry and worked as a sawyer and timber hewer with his son, Jesse, while Elizabeth worked as a nurse. His father had died in 1829 and by 1851 his mother, Sarah, a pauper, was living with him. ^[4] Sarah died in 1854 ^[5] His daughter, Eunice, died aged 25 in February 1858 and was buried at St Peter on the 18th. ^[6] Elizabeth was probably ailing at the time for she died later that month. ^[7]

John moved back to Bolney where he lived at Westlands and resumed his trade as carpenter. He still had two children, Sarah and Ebeneezer, living with him and also a granddaughter, Sarah Grace. His daughter, Sarah, was recorded as Susan in the 1861 census and the child appears to have been her daughter but her birth certificate has not been obtained. ^[8]

John died in Bolney on the 6th of October 1863, aged 65 years and was buried in Cowfold on the 11th. ^{[2] [9]}
