James was born May 13, 1861 at 7 George Street in Saint Helier. He is the son of Charles Gillam and Eliza Mugford and was named after his maternal grandfather, James Mugford.
His father died in November 1863 and in 1871, James is a 9 year old scholar, living with his widowed mother Eliza in Saint Helier's Church, Saint Helier, Jersey.[1]
In 1881, James is a 19 year old boarder in his sister Emily's home and her husband William and family on High Street in Saint Brelade, Jersey. HIs occupation is a "coachman domestic service".[2]
James married Catherine Hearne on June 11, 1882 in Saint Helier, Jersey.[3]
In 1891, he and his wife Katherine and their children are in Saint Helier, Jersey and his occupation is "Coachman Groom".[4]
