GILLAN. - On the 25th October, at Lissinoure, Poowong, Alexander Gillan, elder son of the late William Gillan, Armoy, Co. Antrim, Ireland, aged 84 years.
Mr. Alexander Gillan, one of the pioneers of the Poowong district, who died a few days ago, was born at Armoy, County Antrim, Ireland, and arrived in Melbourne by the Red Jacket in September 1864. In the following year he joined the Education, department, and had charge of schools at Mount Rowan, near Ballarat, and Glendonald, near Creswick. Forty years ago Mr. Gillan went with his family to Poowong, and took part in developing that section of Gippsland.
