Ross was born on July 16, 1876, the second son to James and Martha (Rowland) Gillanders. He died on September 24, 1954. The Northern Standard reported on October 1, 1954 on his life and his funeral. They said that Ross had left Greyglass school at 16 in order to assist his father in the collection of the County rates. They said that he recalled doing his rounds on horseback. Later, he was appointed as the rate collector for Monaghan Urban Council, a post which he held until his retirement in 1950. The Northern Standard also reported that Ross was a buyer of grassseed, oats and potatoes. Ross was a member and a past Worshipful Master of Crosses LOL 815 and manifested a keen interest in Crosses Band. He had been a member of First Monaghan Presbyterian church all his life and for many years had been a member of the Committee. The funeral was described as one of the largest seen in the Monaghan area for some time and the line of cars following the funeral hearse stretched from The Wood (Family home) to Stanley Terrace. He is survived by his widow,Sarah; two daughters,(Mrs Dorothy Kerr and Mrs Marjorie MacAuley); while a son (Bertie) pre-deceased him. He also leaves two brothers, Mr Edward Gillanders of Hertfordshire and Mr H G Gillanders of The Diamond, Monaghan.
