Bertie was the first and only son of Ross and Sarah (Brimmer) Gillanders. He attended the Model School in Monaghan before being apprenticed to The Diamond Drapery in Monaghan. He moved to become sales manager with Messrs J J Walker's motor business in Glasslough Street, Monaghan. During his father's illness he took over the collection of the rates and ran the accounts of the Monaghan Lighting Company. For this he was warmly thanked by the Urban Council.
